Un nouveau musée en hommage à la lutte de Nelson Mandela contre l’apartheid en Afrique du Sud sera construit sur les lieux où le lauréat du prix Nobel de la paix avait été arrêté il y a 49 ans.
Mandla Mandela s’est exprimé vendredi au nom de son grand-père à l’occasion du lancement d’une exposition sur le site devant accueillir le futur musée.
Il a déclaré que l’ex-chef d’Etat, ancien leader du Congrès national africain (ANC), lui avait demandé d’exhorter les Sud-Africains à se souvenir de tous ceux qui avaient lutté contre l’apartheid et pas uniquement de son propre combat.
Les autorités provinciales assureront le financement d’un mémorial et de ce musée de 1,2 million de dollars (environ 844.000 euros), projet qui doit permettre de créer des emplois dans la région largement rurale.
Le 5 août 1962, Mandela avait été arrêté près de la ville d’Howick, à quelque 500k m de Johannesburg. Lauréat du prix Nobel de la paix en 1993 avec l’ancien chef d’Etat Frederik de Klerk, il est devenu le premier président noir de l’Afrique du Sud en 1994 après avoir passé 27 ans derrière les barreaux.
New museum in honor of Nelson Mandela’s struggle against apartheid in South Africa will be built on the site where the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was arrested 49 years ago.
Mandla Mandela spoke Friday on behalf of his grandfather at the launch of an exhibition on the site to accommodate the future museum.
He said that the former Head of State, former leader of the African National Congress (ANC) asked him to urge South Africans to remember all those who fought against apartheid and not only his own fight.
Provincial authorities provide funding for a memorial and the museum of $ 1.2 million (about 844,000 euros), a project that is expected to create jobs in the largely rural area.
